Are we language users?

Are we language users or language owners? What does that mean and how can we know?

A language user is a person who uses a foreign language for a certain purpose. That person uses this language only when the situation demands it.

A language owner, on the other hand, is a person who uses a foreign language because he likes it not became he must. He looks for opportunities to use this language in and enjoys that time when he uses that language. He has a sense of ownership over the language. It is HIS language even if he is not in complete control of it or even close to language mastery.

The big differences between both people are, the first does not enjoy using that language while the second one does. The first one tries to avoid using the language if it is possible however the second one seeks those chances because he wants to use it more. The user uses it only when he must and for that single purpose, but the owner uses it because he likes it and because he wants to not because he has to. Lastly, the first one does not like or enjoy the language while the second one likes it and enjoys it so much.

Now, taking those differences in mind, which of them is expected to be a better user of the language?

If your answer is the language Owner, then you are absolutely correct. The reason for that is simple, language acquisition occurs only when the person is having fun and enjoying the task he is involved in. Also, that sense of ownership gives you power over the skill you are learning; in this case it is the language learning skill.

To sum this all up, we can all agree that if we want to master a language, we need to own it. And in order to own that language, we need to enjoy it and enjoy using it. So, we need to kick back, relax and find the best way to do that without stressing.
